Interim Report 2023

Each year the committee seeks new ways of attracting people, and improving the event. Holbeck Gala is a genuine community event. We acknowledge with thanks the help of agencies and organisations without whose support the event would be difficult to stage. This year the gala was held on Saturday 1st July on Holbeck Moor keeping up with the 70-year tradition of holding such an event on the moor. Once again we had very good feedback that people had enjoyed the day. This year we were lucky to have a fine, dry and warm day, if a bit windy. We had about two thousand local residents came out to enjoy the sunshine and see what was on offer and have some fun. We were also joined by an increasing number of people from other parts of the city. The gala is helping Holbeck to become a destination! With Leeds being the capital of Culture this year we were lucky to be supported by the council with some amazing and very talented musicians from around the world and the UK.Stalls were spread out in the centre of the Moore and along the paths. We had a total of 38 stalls this year made up of market-type stalls, food, information and entertainment. A Cafe and a BBQ were also organised by our committee and all food was sold out by the end of the day.The children's activities took up an area at the corner of the Moor. We had Inflatables which were free to play on as the committee agreed to use funds to cover the full cost, activities provided by the Youth Team, Football by the Rise team, a climbing wall, petting zoo, sensory tent, Drumming with Re:establish Youth group, face painting and entertainment by DJ Danny which all helped to make the Gala a fun place for kids. This years event featured a diverse range of entertainment. One central stage on the Moor hosted by Old Chapel Music CIC featured many different artists and local dance groups.VolunteersThis year, we had 20 volunteers - not including the committee (who are also all volunteers). They came from established South Leeds communities and between them they worked 207 hours for free. A massive “thank you” to all of them! They got through a vast range of work: setting up stalls, moving generators, directing traffic, looking after lost children, picking up litter and managing stalls, etc...The Committee would like to thank all our supporters who helped make this year’s Gala the most successful on record and everyone who came along and made it such a great day.
